It’s the third national honor recognizing Burns for his sensational freshman season. He was also named the NCBWA Freshman National Pitcher of the Year and the Collegiate Baseball National Co-Freshman Player of the Year.
Burns, from Gallatin, Tennessee, was dominant on the mound as the Friday night starter for the 2022 SEC champions. He posted an 8-2 record with a 2.91 ERA and 103 strikeouts, a K mark that ranks third in program history for freshmen.
Burns was one of the SEC’s top pitchers in numerous statistical categories, including strikeouts per 9 innings (3rd – 11.54), ERA (5th – 2.91), strikeouts (5th – 103), wins (t-5th – 8) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (5th – 4.12).
UT fans can look forward to 2 more seasons of Burns before he’s eligible to re-enter the MLB Draft.
