The Trent Dilfer Experiment at UAB is over.

The Blazers fired Dilfer after a 2-4 start to the 2025 season that included a 53-33 road loss last weekend at Florida Atlantic. The Blazers entered Week 6 ranked 131st out of 134 FBS programs in scoring defense – allowing 39 points per game.

The loss to the Owls dropped UAB to 0-3 in American Conference play this season. Dilfer, who was hired in 2023 to replace interim head coach Bryant Vincent. The job was Dilfer’s first coaching position at any level of collegiate play, as he previously went 44-10 in 4 seasons as head coach at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, Tenn.

Dilfer, 53, played 14 seasons at quarterback in the NFL for 5 different teams – starting in Tampa Bay and most notably for the Baltimore Ravens during the Super Bowl-winning season in 2000. Despite the Super Bowl XXXV title, Dilfer was not re-signed by the Ravens – becoming the first starting QB to be released after a Super Bowl victory.

Dilfer spent his next 4 seasons primarily as a backup with the Seattle Seahawks along with stints with the Cleveland Browns and the San Francisco 49ers before retiring in 2008. Dilfer then spent 11 seasons as a television analyst for the NFL Network and ESPN.
