Vanderbilt isn’t a sexy destination for many recruits.

The Commodores compete against some of the most-successful programs in college football.

Derek Mason appears to have his squad headed in the right direction, but it still may take a while.

The Commodores rank last in the SEC in recruiting.

Let’s take a look at Vanderbilt’s recruiting grades so far:

OFFENSE C+  (5 TOTAL COMMITS)

Vanderbilt’s offense needs the most help. Its offense is ranked 111th in the country while is defense is ranked 30th.

Vanderbilt has only five recruits on the offensive side of the ball so far. The Commodores’ best prospect is three-star QB Deuce Wallace who can hopefully add a spark to an offense that only averaged 172 yards through the air per game. Wallace may provide competition to freshman Kyle Shurmur, who showed potential late in the season.

DEFENSE B (8 COMMITS)

The Commodores defense is its bread and butter right now. It allowed 143 rushing yards per game and 207 passing yards per game which is middle of the pack.  But Vanderbilt is adding more depth. The secondary will include four-star CB prospect Joejuan Williams and three-star safety Zaire Jones.

RECRUITING NEEDS

When you’re ranked last in recruiting, it’s clear there are still glaring needs to be addressed. Vanderbilt can use all the help it can get on offense. The only wide receiver commitment is three-star prospect Donaven Tennyson. The only other offensive additions are a tight end and two linemen.
