Auburn finally earned an SEC victory this season and it was in large part because of the defense, especially sophomore linebacker Xavier Atkins. After his efforts in Auburn‘s 33-24 victory at Arkansas, Atkins was recognized as the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week.
The 6-foot Atkins wreaked havoc on the Razorbacks, racking up 13 tackles, 2 sacks, and a forced fumble.

Atkins has tallied at least 10 tackles in 3 of the last 4 games. He was excellent 2 weeks ago in the 23-17 double overtime loss to Missouri as well. In that game, Atkins recorded 11 tackles and 2 sacks. Overall this season, Atkins has produced 45 solo tackles, 7 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and an interception.
Atkins transferred to Auburn after spending his freshman season at LSU. In his lone year at LSU, Atkins saw limited time and had 3 tackles. The Texas native was regarded by 247Sports as the nation’s No. 42 linebacker coming out of high school.
Next up for Auburn is a home contest vs. Kentucky on Nov. 1 as the Tigers aim to go above. 500 for the first time since Week 3. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET (SEC Network).
