Tony Vitello jokes ‘I can’t talk down to guys anymore’ as MLB manager
The San Francisco Giants went outside the box when they hired Tony Vitello as their manager. The former Tennessee Volunteers‘ head coach opened his MLB career with the unenviable task of hosting the New York Yankees.
On Saturday’s national broadcast of the Yankees-Giants game, FOX’s Ken Rosenthal asked Vitello what adjustments he has made in his new role. Vitello joked that he could no longer “talk down” to players before describing how much vaster an MLB manager’s duties are than that of a college head coach.

“I can’t talk down to guys anymore. They’re my age, or it feels like they’re close to it,” Vitello said with a smile. “But in all honesty… there’s just so many more people involved. There’s more people in the stands… in the clubhouse… it truly is a manager position, not just a head coach position.”
Vitello’s transition will be a long process, but it’s safe to say he and the Giants hoped for better results in their opening series. San Francisco scored just 1 total run in the series versus New York, and is 0-3 ahead of a three-game set in San Diego against the Padres. First pitch for tonight’s matchup, featuring Landen Roupp and Walker Buehler, is 9:40 p.m. ET.
