Jaxson Dart transferred to Ole Miss from USC this offseason, and many expect him to be the Rebels’ Week 1 starter this fall.

Luke Altmyer is also competing for the job this spring, though, and no starter has been named at this point.

On Thursday, Dart spoke about his relationship with Altmyer, saying the 2 quarterbacks are friends (via 247Sports):

“Luke’s a great kid. I remember one of my first day’s coming in we were throwing in the indoor facility with some of the receivers and he was the first kid to come shake my hand,” Dart said. “He’s a great kid, and I can tell he’s raised really well. We are friends.”

He added that the competition is going well and helping both quarterbacks improve:

“I’m in the same position I was in when I first got to SC. We obviously have the same goals in mind. It’s competition, It breeds the best out of both of us. It’s going to push us and help us become better players,” Dart offered.

“Obviously, it’s some new stuff for me. It was last week, we came in for the first three days and there were new things I hadn’t had before. Just getting those reps really helps. But If I can compare myself to where I was last spring to this spring, I feel like I’m a lot further ahead. Just like my knowledge of the game, I think Coach (Charlie) Weiss has done a great job with that, helping quarterbacks understand defenses more and really meeting with us beforehand to get us ready before spring ball even started. I feel like we had like 75 percent of the install in before spring ball even started. Just meeting with him has been an easy transition for me to get to know the offense. From here on out I think it’s mostly just reps and understanding how guys play, their speeds and all that stuff.”

Who will win the competition? We’ll likely not get an official confirmation from coach Lane Kiffin until this fall. For now, both quarterbacks are working on grasping the new offense.
