Lane Kiffin knows he isn’t the first innovative offensive play-caller to coach in Oxford.
Kiffin was asked about Hugh Freeze on Wednesday’s SEC teleconference. Kiffin’s Rebels face Freeze’s Liberty Flames on Saturday in Oxford.
“I think he did a lot more than me,” Kiffin said of Freeze. “They were very unique back then. There was a lot of that in the Big 12, not really in the SEC. … Ironically, it’s not really the same anymore. That sort of surprised me this week. He’s changed, which I would not have expected, since he’s been really successful over the years going really fast.”
Unfortunately, Saturday’s game might not feature the offensive eye candy fans were hoping to see. Kiffin said the Rebels have had to go simple on offense due to mounting injuries.
“Yeah, we’re having to (simplify things),” Kiffin said on the call. “Obviously, 2 of 11 starters (being healthy) is unheard of. … We’re going to simplify things, try to play some younger players. … We were very overmatched at a number of spots and we have to find ways to overcome that. That’s what coaching is.”
Ole Miss-Liberty is scheduled for noon ET/11 a.m. CT, airing on the SEC Network.
