NO. 9 – KATY PERRY
Not only is Katy Perry one of the biggest stars in pop music, but she may also be the most entertaining guest picker in the history of ESPN’s College Gameday. And despite being a “California Gurl,” the singer pledged her allegiance to Ole Miss, the alma matter of her longtime manager Bradford Cobb.
Perry appeared during the show’s live broadcast from Oxford just hours before the Rebels’ biggest game of the season. Ole Miss played host to No. 1 Alabama in Week 6, which was not only enough to earn CBS’ afternoon slot, but also entice College Gameday — which became a traveling show in 1993 — to make its first appearance at The Grove.
Ole Miss needed a big name to match the ambience of the weekend and the “Firework” singer fit the bill. Although the appearance had the potential to be a total disaster, Perry exceeded expectations and provided the broadcast with several memorable moments.
While making her pick for the Oklahoma-TCU game, Perry confessed her “love” for Sooners quarterback Trevor Knight several times, who seemed flustered enough to throw two interceptions in a loss later that afternoon. The singer also managed to make co-host Kirk Herbstreit blush during her selection of the former quarterback’s alma matter Ohio State.
Perry was also successful in her attempt to troll LSU fans.
Of course, Perry picked Ole Miss, leading the Oxford crowd in a chant of Hotty Toddy and throwing Lee Corso’s Big Al mascot head in the process. But the fun didn’t end there.
After attending the Rebels’ thrilling 23-17 upset of the Crimson Tide, Perry celebrated with the Ole Miss fans by storming the field and chugging beers in a local bar.
