Professional spring football is coming to the heart of the SEC as the Alliance of American Football league announced on Tuesday that Birmingham would be among the inaugural cities to host a franchise for the upcoming pro league.

The Alliance of American Football, also known as the AAF, did not announce a head coach for the franchise at this time but plans to do so on Wednesday.

The other cities that have been selected to host franchises include Orlando (coached by Steve Spurrier), Atlanta (coached by Brad Childress and offensive coordinator Michael Vick), Memphis (coached by Mike Singletary), Phoenix (coached by Rick Neuheisel), Salt Lake City (coached by Dennis Erickson) and San Diego (coached by Mike Martz). Considering the coaches mostly have more NFL ties, it’s to be expected that the coach of the Birmingham franchise will, too.

AAF games are expected to be two hours in length and feature minimal commercial breaks. The debut season will kick off the week after the upcoming Super Bowl, giving it an edge over the XFL — which plans to begin in 2020. The AAF games will be broadcast by CBS Sports.
