One can never predict what might happen during live TV, especially with people who aren’t usually in front of the camera.

On the “Coaches Film Room” broadcast of the national championship game — aired on ESPNU on Monday night — between LSU and Clemson, TCU head coach Gary Patterson had a very interesting exchange about quarterback D’Eriq King with Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy during a targeting review.

“Remind me to show you someone who went in the portal,” Patterson said. “Guess where’s he going to end up. I’m going to show you.”

Gundy responded: “We’ve got another portal? Tonight?”

“When we go into break, I’m going to show you something.”

The officials announcing a Clemson targeting call and a subsequent ejection for linebacker James Skalski interrupted the exchange, and it wasn’t brought up on air again, but Patterson’s comments left the audience wondering if he actually had insider information on where the Houston graduate transfer quarterback might end up playing next season.

LSU fans hope it’s Baton Rouge. The Tigers will have to replace Heisman-Trophy winning quarterback Joe Burrow, who is projected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. According to the betting lines at SportsLine, SEC West programs LSU and Arkansas have the best odds of landing King in the transfer portal.

ESPN had 15 different broadcasts of the national championship game Monday night. It’s too bad none of them included what Patterson and Gundy discussed during the commercial breaks.
