The Vanderbilt Commodores are off to a hot start, sitting at 2-0 and fresh off a huge 44-0 shutout of Alabama A&M.

Though coach Derek Mason’s squad has yet to play a Power 5 school, some people are buying into the Vandy hype.

ESPN host Peter Burns tweeted on Sunday morning that Vanderbilt QB Kyle Shurmur is playing like the best quarterback in the conference, adding that he thinks the Commodores are better than Tennessee right now:

Shurmur did have a strong performance on Saturday, completing 15 of his 18 passes for 202 yards and four touchdowns, but it did come against Alabama A&M — a team that won’t be confused with Alabama anytime soon.

Yes, Vanderbilt beat Tennessee last year, but the Vols have a big win over ACC foe Georgia Tech under their belts already this year.

The Commodores will have several chances to prove they’re for real in the coming weeks, as they face four straight games against ranked opponents — No. 19 Kansas State next week, No. 1 Alabama on Sept. 23, No. 22 Florida on Sept. 30 and No. 15 Georgia on Oct. 7.

If Vandy is going to make a statement, now’s the time to do it.
