A Friday column about college football naturally begins with… Katy Perry! The queen of college football as I like to call her. After Katy Perry somehow managed to embarrass all previous ESPN GameDay celebrity pickers while simultaneously making it clear that she watches no football (who would have imagined that was possible?), I started to wonder if there was a bigger agenda.

Was this about penetrating that lucrative small southern town pop music market? Not likely. Was it about finding new future concert venues? Like that bar that she made famous? Maybe.. until Chris Fowler posted the exterior of the bar on Instagram. I believe one commenter asking if that was Baghdad was appropriate.

Then, I saw the news that Katy Perry was named as this year’s Super Bowl entertainment beating out Rihanna and Coldplay. Was the college football world’s reaction instrumental to landing her the gig?

Did Katy Perry know this from the beginning? Did the increased exposure as a result of the GameDay experience warrant Katy Perry paying the NFL for the appearance or did the NFL drop the pay requirement because of the buzz she created last week? Who knows, but I think either way, we can give Oxford the assist here.

Is it possible that ESPN College GameDay just became a platform from which to launch careers or even bigger aspirations?  Maybe ESPN should take a hint from the NFL and start charging celebrities to be the “guest picker”! Maybe Katy Perry should charging for consulting services on how to take over something without knowing anything about it (football in her case).

Similar to how Matthew McConaughey received immense buzz recently when he had the opportunity to win an Oscar and an Emmy in the same year for Best Actor on Dallas Buyer’s Club and HBO’s True Detective series, Katy Perry might successfully grab awards for biggest appearance in both college football and professional football in the same season. Like McConaughey, maybe she can cash in on the buzz with some awkward Lincoln commercials.

Staying on the topic of GameDay, Fowler also instagrammed (yes, it’s a verb) a photo of his hospitality gift from the fine folks in Starkville. Not a bad start to the weekend, Starkville!

ESPN’s Bill Simmons has given the world of suspended employees and athletes an interesting and funny approach to being suspended. His Instagram account has been used during his hiatus from ESPN to essentially post images of Simmons doing things other than working. It’s quite an effective method of trolling, and I’m guessing his next suspension will include Instagram.

Perhaps, this is an opportunity for freshly suspended Todd Gurley. I’m not sure it is Gurley’s personality… some think that Gurley will actually benefit from being suspended. After all, does he really need to prove anything on the field in college football? Why not save your legs for the league? Why not try to avoid the risk of catastrophic injury a la Lattimore.

Can the SEC East get any worse? Gurley’s out. Spurrier and South Carolina are in a freefall. The anemic Florida offense had a glimmer of hope in Treon Harris who is now suspended for sexual battery allegations. Kentucky is a football school. Vanderbilt became Vanderbilt again. Butch Jones is playing jenga and needs a new slogan. It’s a mess.

Forget the East for a minute, can Florida’s situation get any worse? What a week! Treon Harris leads a comeback win in Knoxville then has a sexual battery allegation literally minutes after he returns to Gainesville. Another backup QB gets into a publicized fight with another player. Oh, and some poor high school kid got catfished and committed to the Gators despite not having an offer.

Not a good week for Muschamp who just seems doomed in Gainesville. Doomed? But he’s gotten two wins just this season on plays that were executed after double zero you might say. Ok, maybe doomed is not the best word. Strange.

Once again, the most interesting action this weekend resides in the West. Is Auburn the new gold standard in the SEC?

Is the state of Mississippi the center of gravity for college football in 2014?

Remember Alabama? You know.. they have a coach named Nick Saban. His assistant is a guy named Lane. They have an annoying former QB named AJ McCarron. Speaking of… did the Brent Musburger / Katherine Webb moment basically top tick the Alabama-Nick Saban run? The subsequent appearance on Splash should have tipped us off!

Could Bielema make his own run at Coach of the Year with a Crimson Tide upset? This game is basically a tribute to the old days of SEC football where our boys lined up in the I-formation and pounded it between the tackles. You know, way back to like 2012… This throwback game became even more throwback-ish with Arkansas sporting some uniforms from 1964! In a day where teams are going spread-uptempo and wearing increasing amounts of chrome on Saturdays, Bielema is bucking the trend.

I love October. Enjoy your Saturday.
