Paul Finebaum has tried to navigate the updated list of contenders for the College Football Playoff, and while 2 spots seem secure, the remaining 2 teams are as open as ever.

Finebaum made his weekly appearance on WJOX out of Birmingham, Alabama and the “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning” show to discuss the latest developments.

“I don’t think there’s anyone in Alabama or Georgia’s league,” Finebaum said. “So where do you go now? I thought Oregon was on the next level and they’re not. They lost a game they should have won. The Cincinnati conversation will be cute, but I’m not going to participate, because I don’t think Cincinnati will be there in the end based on what they do the next 8 weeks. They just don’t have a game left that they can beat their chest about. Ultimately winning at Notre Dame is not going to be enough to get your attention this year.”

Finebaum then said if Oklahoma loses this weekend to Texas, the Big 12 is in trouble with getting a team in the College Football Playoff. While the Big Ten has 4 teams in the top 10, Finebaum said that will take care of itself in due time.

“I do think the Big Ten has one legitimate contender in Iowa, and I’m still holding my breath about Ohio State,” Finebaum said. “I don’t think we’ve heard the last of them.”

Finally, he said because no team is in the same league as Alabama and Georgia, this season will be about who fights to get to third or fourth and the opportunity to lose to those heavyweights.
