The The AP Top 25 preseason poll is always a controversial topic, as are any type of rankings released ahead of the season.

Paul Finebaum knows that, so the ESPN analyst and SEC Network host was quick to call out the poll after it was released on Monday. Here’s what he said during an appearance on “SportsCenter”:

“(The top four) is going to change very quickly… in the very first weekend of the season, Ohio State and Notre Dame,” he said. “Somebody is going to be taking a pretty good fall. Other than that, this is as predictable as it gets and it’s now to the point that it doesn’t really matter what you did the previous year. If you’re Clemson or if you have a big name like Southern Cal, you’re going to be ranked high. Clemson had a bad year by their standards. They went 10-3 and didn’t make the playoffs, but they’re right back in contention this year. And I think all the arguments that there’s not enough teams in contention are being proven true by this fall.”

Looking at the essence of what Finebaum said, it’s easy to make the argument that all of it was reasonable. This was a shaky Clemson team and there are several other college football teams who took a step or performed well overall that could have taken the Tigers’ spot in the poll.

Here’s a look at exactly how the poll shook out:

1. Alabama (54)
2. Ohio State (6)
3. Georgia (3)
4. Clemson
5. Notre Dame
6. Texas A&M
7. Utah
8. Michigan
9. Oklahoma
10. Baylor
11. Oregon
12. Oklahoma State
13. North Carolina State
14. USC
15. Michigan State
16. Miami (FL)
17. Pittsburgh
18. Wisconsin
19. Arkansas
20. Kentucky
21. Ole Miss
22. Wake Forest
23. Cincinnati
24. Houston
25. BYU

As Finebaum stated, don’t be surprised if this gets vastly shaken up. It’s something that’s happened far more than one time.
