Sad news to share this morning as one of the real-life players that inspired the hit movie “Remeber the Titans” has passed away.

Julius Campbell, who was portrayed by Wood Harris in the movie released back in 2000, died Friday of organ failure at the age of 65, according to The Washington Post.

If you can’t remember the story behind the movie, it centered on T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Va., the first season following the integration of the school back in 1971. T.C. Williams went on to win the state championship that season under Coach Herman Boone, played by Denzel Washington in the movie.

“Julius was very, very instrumental on that team at simply getting kids to just talk to one another, kids who never talked to kids from another race their entire lives,” Coach Boone said to The Washington Post. “By doing so, they learned many things about each other that were not passed down to them and for that, the world owes Julius a debt of gratitude.”

Campbell went on to graduate from T.C. Williams in 1973 and played for Ferrum Junior College after high school.
