An SEC school was located in 10 of the top 20 college football states in 2015, according to Sporting News.

Here’s how it figured this out statistically based on wins and losses, using its own system. It only took states with multiple FBS schools. Then, they ranked them based on this criteria, per Sporting News:

“Total wins and winning percentage were each ranked from 1 to 15. Power 5 wins and winning percentage also were each ranked from 1 to 15. The goal is to have the lowest score.

Bowl wins took away one point from that score, New Year’s Day Six bowls took away three points and a national championship took away six points.”

Here are the results, in descending order, with each state’s points in parenthesis:

No. 20: Georgia (63)
No. 19: Louisiana (62.5)
No. 18: Tennessee (61)
No. 17: Arkansas (61)
No. 16: Illinois (57)
No. 15: West Virginia (56.5)
No. 14: Washington (54.5)
No. 13: Kentucky (54)
No. 12: Pennsylvania (52.5)
No. 11: South Carolina (46.5)
No. 10: North Carolina (43)
No. 9: Florida (41)
No. 8: Utah (33.5)
No. 7: Ohio (28)
No. 6: Texas (26)
No. 5: Mississippi (24)
No. 4: Michigan (24)
No. 3: Oklahoma (22.5)
No. 2: Alabama (22)
No. 1: California (18)

Alabama finished No. 2 based on the fact that despite the Crimson Tide going 14-1 and winning the national championship, the other FBS schools in the state in Auburn, South Alabama and Troy went a combined 16-21.

Meanwhile, California earned the top spot based on the fact that five of its seven FBS schools had at least eight wins last season: Stanford (12-2), San Diego State (11-3), California (8-5), UCLA (8-5) and USC (8-6).
