The 2016 college football recruiting cycle is currently in a dead period until Jan. 13, so it’s a good time to take stock of which Southeastern Conference assistant coaches are faring the best on the recruiting trail so far, according to 247Sports Composite recruiter rankings.

Here is the current top 10, according to those rankings which are determined by a formula using current commits and 247Sports recruiting industry-generated composite rankings, so it’s a numerical representation of the analysis of the entire recruiting industry.

These certainly are not final and please note this is not a subjective/opinion ranking of “best recruiters” piece, but rather a roundup of the current rankings. That being said, one still has to be impressed with the individual efforts of all of the assistants.

1- Bradley Dale Peveto, LSU safeties coach

Total commits: 5 (all primary)
Total points: 72.39
Top commit: Eric Monroe, S, Houston (Texas) North Shore (four star)

Quick hitter: He quietly has been one of the most effective recruiters in the SEC during the past decade. This cycle, he’s really done well in the state of Texas.

2- Matt Luke, Ole Miss offensive line coach

Total commits: 6 (five primary, one secondary)
Total points: 69.5
Top commit: Greg Little, OT, Allen (Texas) (five star)

Quick hitter: Luke has always been an excellent recruiter since his first go-around at Ole Miss under David Cutcliffe/Ed Orgeron from 2002-07. His success this cycle is not surprising.

3- Kevin Sherrer, Georgia defensive assistant

Total commits: 5 (four primary, one secondary)
Total points: 68.51
Top commit: Julian Rochester, DT, Powder Springs (Ga.) McEachern (five star)

Quick hitter: Sherrer is one of the SEC’s rising stars on the recruiting trail and was recently retained by new UGA head coach Kirby Smart. He’s the primary recruiter for three of the Dawgs’ elite defensive line prospects.

4- Rodney Garner, Auburn associate head coach/defensive line coach

Total commits: 8 (five primary, three secondary)
Total points: 64.93
Top commit: Marlon Davidson, DE, Greenville (Ala.) (five star)

Quick hitter: Garner is one of the top recruiters in the history of the SEC, and with Davidson and others (including four-star defensive tackle Antwuan Jackson), he has a bumper crop of talented prospects committed to his alma mater this cycle.

5- Dameyune Craig, Auburn passing game coordinator

Total commits: 3 (all primary)
Total points: 60.1
Top commit: Kyle Davis, WR, Loganville (Ga.) Archer (five star)

Quick hitter: Like Garner, Craig is an Auburn graduate recruiting to Auburn. Davis, considered by many to be the top wide receiver in the country, and Florida speedster Eli Stove are among the best wide out prospects in the cycle and belong to Craig.

6- Maurice Harris, Ole Miss tight ends coach

Total commits: 7 (five primary, two secondary)
Total points: 59.01
Top commit: Octavious Cooley, WR, Laurel (Miss.) (four star)

Quick hitter: Harris has done excellent work both in state and in the state of Tennessee where he has been able to reel in two commits. He’s a key part of what has become a recruiting machine in Oxford under Hugh Freeze.

7- Barry Lunney, Jr., Arkansas tight ends coach

Total commits: 5 (four primary, one secondary)
Total points: 58.32
Top commit: McTelvin Agim, DE, Hope (Ark.) (four-star)

Quick hitter: Lunney Jr., the former Razorbacks quarterback, has been one of Arkansas’ top recruiters since the day he joined Bret Bielema’s staff in Fayetteville. He’s outstanding in-state and getting Agim (No. 1 in Arkansas this cycle) only adds to that reputation.

8- Ed Orgeron, LSU defensive line coach

Total commits: 6 (two primary, four secondary)
Total points: 57.24
Top commit: Edwin Alexander, DT, Hammond (La.) St. Thomas Aquinas (four-star)

Quick hitter: Orgeron may very well be the best recruiter in the modern history of college football and has a bumper crop of talent heading to the Tigers (his home state program) this cycle. He should get a shot at being a head coach at a major program again in the near future.

9- John Schlarman, Kentucky offensive line coach

Total commits: 3 (all primary)
Total points: 56.21
Top commit: Landon Young, OT, Lexington (Ky.) Lafayette

Quick hitter: Schlarman is one of those rising star recruiters and has done an outstanding job for the Wildcats this cycle as the top three prospects in the Commonwealth- all U.S. Army All-Americans (Young, center Drake Jackson and linebacker Kash Daniel) all are heading to Big Blue Nation.

10- Tosh Lupoi, Alabama outside linebackers coach

Total commits: 5
Total points: 55.72
Top commit: B.J. Emmons, RB, Morganton (N.C.) Freedom

Quick hitter: Lupoi has areas of the Atlantic Coast (North Carolina, Virginia, DMV) for the Crimson Tide, an area where Alabama has picked off quite a few elite prospects over the years. This cycle, Lupoi has three commits from the area with four-star ratings per 247Sports Composite rankings.
