It’s never too early to be talking about the Heisman Trophy, right?

We’re now three weeks into the college football season, and already some of the SEC’s Heisman Trophy candidates are starting to separate themselves.

Each week, we’re going to assess their performance and re-calibrate this list to better reflect the chances of a SEC player bringing home the hardware for the first time since former Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel did so in 2012.

Let’s see how they fared in Week 3:

SEC HEISMAN HOPEFUL RANKINGS

1. RB Leonard Fournette, LSU

2015 stats: 47 carries for 387 yards and six rushing touchdowns; one catch for nine yards in two games.

Week 3 performance: Fournette’s 228-yard, three touchdown game against Auburn on Saturday may go down as the running back’s signature performance. Not only did it put the rest of college football on notice, it also likely caught the attention of every last Heisman Trophy voter. If the votes were cast today, he’d likely be the Heisman Trophy winner. It is up to Fournette to keep that momentum for the next three months. No pressure, Leonard.

Status: All aboard. The whole country is on this hype train after Fournette crushed Auburn on Saturday.

2. RB Nick Chubb, Georgia

2015 stats: 56 carries for 468 yards and four rushing touchdowns; two catches for 13 yards in three games.

Week 3 performance: This guy is so good that he’s being underrated by some folks. Case in point: he ran for 159 yards and two touchdowns against South Carolina on Saturday, and most people are treating it as business as usual. If that were another back, we’d be celebrating a huge performance. But since Chubb has run for 100-plus yards for 11 consecutive games, it seems as though his ability to be excellent is being taken for granted on the national scene.

Status: He’s a superstar and a top tier choice for the Heisman Trophy.

3. QB Chad Kelly, Ole Miss

2015 stats: 47-of-73 passing for 898 passing yards, nine passing touchdowns and one interception; 14 carries for 67 yards and three rushing touchdowns in three games.

Week 3 performance: It is time that we start taking this Heisman candidacy seriously. Kelly threw for 341 yards and three touchdowns, while also running for a fourth, in a huge win against No. 2 Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Kelly has pushed him team into the top 5 nationally, and his numbers are among the best in the country at his position. That combination alone makes him worthy of a serious look as a Heisman contender. He’ll get plenty more chances to prove his worth before voting has to happen, but for now he has cracked our top 3.

Status: Trending upward, quickly. Performance against Alabama garnered some national attention.

4. RB Derrick Henry, Alabama

2015 stats: 54 carries, 370 rushing yards, seven rushing touchdowns; seven receptions for 51 receiving yards in three games.

Week 3 performance: To show just how closely contested the spots are on this Heisman watch list, Henry went for 166 yards of total offense against one of the nation’s top defenses and dropped three spots in our rankings. His 23 carries for 127 yards and a touchdown against Ole Miss were numbers plenty good enough to stay in the Top 3, but much of his campaign was centered around being the best back on one of the nation’s top teams. That slogan was hurt by Saturday’s loss.

Status: Hurt by the loss to Ole Miss, but it is repairable damage thanks to a strong individual performance.

5. QB Dak Prescott, Mississippi State

2015 stats: 66-of-101 passing for 799 yards and five touchdowns, no interceptions; 24 carries for 107 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.

Week 3 performance: Prescott had a nice game in limited work against Northwestern State, completing 10-of-11 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns. He has yet to throw an interception this season has overall nice numbers, but he just hasn’t been putting up the video game-type numbers that we became accustomed to last season. In this crop of SEC Heisman candidates, that leave him a step or two behind.

Status: Campaign has grown stagnant. He needs a big game, soon.

On the watch list: Tennessee RB Jalen Hurd; Texas A&M WR Christian Kirk; Texas A&M DE Myles Garrett; Ole Miss DL Robert Nkemdiche; Arkansas RB Alex Collins.
