Maalik Murphy would have played in the SEC if he stayed with Texas, but the former Longhorns backup QB is checking out another program already in the league.

That’s according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who reported that Murphy would visit South Carolina, along with Duke and Oregon State as he searches for his next destination. He’s a redshirt freshman who’ll be immediately eligible and have 3 seasons of eligibility remaining.

South Carolina is looking for a new starter after Spencer Rattler announced plans to enter the NFL Draft.

Murphy spent much of this past season as the backup to Quinn Ewers, as Arch Manning was the 3rd-string QB in Austin.

Murphy started 2 games for Texas this season, home wins over BYU and Kansas State because Ewers was injured. Murphy threw for 477 yards and 3 touchdowns in those games.

Before the BYU game, Murphy threw 8 passes this season, and completed 4 for 47 yards. He didn’t have a touchdown pass or interception.
