Shane Beamer hears about tough season from kindergartner: 'You've won 4 games!'
Shane Beamer has definitely felt some pressure from South Carolina fans this season, and that pressure isn’t just coming from adults.
In his press conference on Tuesday, Beamer discussed how much the Clemson-South Carolina rivalry means to the state, using “jersey day” at his son’s school as an example.
“They had jersey day at my son’s school last Friday and I went to the little assembly at 8 a.m. for all the 4th graders and 3rd graders and 2nd graders and 1st graders and kindergartners at his school,” Beamer said. “It was pretty cool, all you saw were garnet jerseys, which were the majority, but then also plenty of orange, Tiger jerseys in there as well. So you were reminded how important college athletics is to so many, particularly in a state like this as well. You’re either one or the other.”
While he enjoyed seeing all the South Carolina jerseys at the school, a few days later when he was there for his son’s performance, he received some feedback from a student on his season so far.
“One of the kindergartner’s was two rows in front of me and he was like, “Hey coach!’ I was like ‘Hey buddy!'” Beamer said. “I thought he was a fan or something like that. And then he kept going down the row in front of me, walked up the steps and then came two rows behind me to sit down… And I hear him behind me and he’s like, ‘Hey coach!’ I’m like, man this guy’s a big Gamecock, I turned around and say, ‘Hey buddy,’ and he goes ‘You’ve won 4 games!’ So I’m not sure if he’s a tiger or if he’s a disgruntled Gamecock.”
So it’s clear that pressure to perform well comes from all age groups, and Beamer is looking to make that young fan happy this weekend with an upset over Clemson.
