After a promising season last year, things are not going well for Shane Beamer in South Carolina.

The Gamecocks are now 2-4 after Saturday night’s narrow loss to Florida, and things won’t get easier as the Gamecocks still have Missouri, Texas A&M, Kentucky and Clemson on the schedule.

Saturday night’s loss to Florida was crushing. The Gamecocks led by 10 points in the fourth quarter, but Florida scored a pair of touchdowns in the final 5 minutes, including one to take the lead with 40 seconds left.

Beamer didn’t avoid calling the game what it was, saying the narrow loss was “gut-wrenching.”

Beamer believes the performance in the fourth quarter was uncharacteristic for South Carolina.

“Disappointed that we got a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter and couldn’t finish it,” Beamer said in his postgame press conference. “That’s not like us. Plenty of opportunities to finish, and didn’t.”

He said that lack of execution was a major part of the loss. His defense had several slip ups throughout the game, and Florida made them pay for the miscues.

“We called pressures and didn’t run them,” Beamer said. “Just did not play clean football. We had some calls that were perfect calls. And their guy made the play and we didn’t.”

“When you give up that many explosive plays in the secondary, it’s tough to win,” Beamer added. “It’s not like we’re a super-young group.”
