Shame Beamer and South Carolina (2-2) will have a big challenge in Week 5 when they travel to face No. 21 Tennessee (3-1).
It’ll be a rematch of South Carolina’s emphatic 63-38 home victory that was part of an 8-5 season in Beamer’s 2nd season at the helm. Right after that win vs. Tennessee, South Carolina went on the road to edge Clemson 31-30.
When asked in a recent press conference about if the signature victory produced momentum, Beamer expressed it elevated the possibilities.
“I think there’s signs of it certainly. Not that we weren’t a confident team before that game. But I think certainly the confidence that we took out of that game led right into the next week against Clemson,” Beamer said. “Didn’t win the bowl game but gave ourselves an opportunity. Then just the expectations that we have going into this season.”
Senior quarterback Spencer Rattler went for 438 yards, 6 touchdowns, and no interceptions in last season’s matchup. This season, Rattler has passed for 1,242 yards, 7 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions.
Beamer is impressed with how Rattler has elevated his game since that game last season. Rattler is taking a business-like approach into the SEC showdown.
“That was a tremendous team that we played last year in Tennessee here at home. We played obviously really, really well that night,” Beamer said. “I think everybody got to see the Spencer that we had been seeing in practice. He put it all together. He’s only taken off since that game as well.”
South Carolina is coming off a 37-30 win vs. Mississippi State, while Tennessee routed UTSA 45-14. South Carolina at Tennessee will be on Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. EST (SEC Network).
