South Carolina tight end Jesse Sanders announced Tuesday that he would be stepping away from the game of football amid a pair of ACL tears across his career.

Sanders was a redshirt sophomore in the Gamecocks program, hailing from Aiken, South Carolina, about 50 miles Southwest of Columbia.

He made his announcement via Twitter Tuesday evening:

Sanders’ impact on South Carolina

Sanders spent 3 years with the Gamecocks and had some terrible injury history from the beginning. He tore his ACL his first week into fall camp his freshman year after committing to South Carolina as a 3-star walk-on recruit. He appeared in just 1 game his 2nd season in Columbia, still dealing with the aforementioned ACL tear.

In Sanders’ announcement, he affirmed that he plans on having an “active role” in the Gamecocks program moving forward.
