Will Muschamp took his time in the film room this week picking apart what Akron does well as South Carolina prepares for the Zips in a makeup game on Saturday.
QB Kato Nelson is a dual threat, and RB Van Edwards, Jr. is an instinctive runner, the coach said, and Muschamp pointed out Edwards’ ability on a stretch play to the outside where he found a crease for a long game.
“I think he’s got really good vision down the field,” Muschamp said. “He’s a one-cut runner, and gets the ball north and south and gets the ball in space. As you can see, he’s a tough guy to get on the ground.”
Muschamp also noted how Akron beat Northwestern, 39-34 in Week 2, which is playing this week for the Big Ten title.
“Physical at the point of attack, good tacklers,” Muschamp said.
The Zips are 4-7, and have lost four straight games.
This is a makeup game in place of the matchup with Marshall, which was called off because of Hurricane Florence. The 6-5 Gamecocks are trying to upgrade their bowl positioning with a win.
