ACC game balls for Week 2
The ACC had an up-and-down showing in Week 2, but there were some strong performances from across the league that are certainly worth highlighting.
Duke and Cal both picked up some crucial wins for the league in nonconference play against Big Ten and ACC competition. A couple other programs were also impressive in ACC play and, of course, there were some dominant performances against FCS foes.
Here’s a game ball for every ACC team who played this weekend:
Boston College: Thomas Castellanos, QB
Thomas Castellanos is the real deal, folks. One week after beating Florida State, Castellanos showed no signs of slowing down. He threw for 234 yards and 4 touchdowns on just 10 pass attempts against Duquesne.
Cal: Peter Sirmon, Defensive coordinator
How ’bout the Golden Bears getting a win at Jordan-Hare? There are numerous Cal players on defense who deserve a shout for this category, so I’m giving the game ball to defensive coordinator Peter Sirmon as a stand-in for the defense as a whole. Quick shoutouts to Teddye Buchanan (3 tackles for loss, 1 forced fumble) and Nohl Williams (2 interceptions), though.
Clemson: Bryant Westco, WR
Clemson put up a whopping 66 points on App State on Saturday. Bryant Wesco got the party started early with a deep ball TD from Cade Klubnik and ended up finishing with a team-high 130 yards on the night. Wesco is going to be pretty important for Clemson’s offense this season as the Tigers’ veteran receivers have been a disappointment so far in 2024.
Duke: Jordan Moore, WR
Jordan Moore continues to be one of the most underrated playmakers in the ACC, but he was certainly noticed by anyone who watched Duke’s overtime win over Northwestern on Friday night. Moore caught 11 passes for 121 yards and 1 touchdown in the win. Maalik Murphy threw for 3 scores as well.
Georgia Tech: Haynes King, QB
Georgia Tech lost on Saturday, but Haynes King still had a decent game. He kept the Yellow Jackets in it until the end, especially with his work on the ground. He scored 3 total touchdowns (1 passing, 2 rushing) in the loss.
Louisville: Tyler Shough, QB
Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough was great again in its win over Jacksonville State. He threw for 349 yards and a pair of TDs.
Miami: Damien Martinez, RB
Strong night for Miami against Florida A&M. The Hurricanes didn’t show any signs of a hangover after their big win over Florida last week. Damien Martinez gets the nod here for averaging over 8 yards per carry, but Cam Ward certainly deserves a shoutout.
NC State: Kevin Concepcion, WR
It’s tough to give out a game ball to anyone after you lose 51-10. But Kevin Concepcion more-or-less did his job in this game. He was responsible for one-third of Grayson McCall’s completions and over half his passing yardage.
North Carolina: Conner Harrell, QB
Conner Harrell made his first regular-season start on Saturday against Charlotte and turned in a quality performance. He threw for 219 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception in UNC’s win over Charlotte. Tougher tests are coming, but this is a solid start.
Pitt: Pat Narduzzi, head coach
Pat Narduzzi is now a leader of the analytics movement. He proved his bonafides in that regard by going for 2 when Pitt scored from down 14 in the 4th quarter. The move paid off, resulting in a 28-27 Pitt win in regulation rather than overtime. Good for Narduzzi, good for Pitt, good for college football.
SMU: Collin Rogers, K
Collin Rogers kept SMU in the game on Friday night against BYU, going 5-for-5 on field goal attempts. He even made a 53-yarder, doing all he could to help the Mustangs pull off the win. Instead, SMU’s offense floundered and the Mustangs ended up taking the upset loss to BYU.
Stanford: Ashton Daniels, QB
Much better efficiency from Ashton Daniels in Week 2! He completed 19-of-23 passes for 221 yards, 2 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. It was against Cal Poly, but we’ll take the wins when we can get them with the Cardinal.
Syracuse: Kyle McCord, QB
Last week, Fran Brown said he needed to send Ryan Day a bottle of champagne for letting McCord get to Syracuse. After his 381-yard, 4-TD performance against Georgia Tech, Brown should be increasing the value of the gift. Maybe a Rolex?
Virginia Tech: Mansoor Delane, DB
Virginia Tech had a few different options for this honor after its 31-14 win over Marshall, but I’m going with Mansoor Delane. He was part of a VT secondary that caused Marshall quarterback Stone Earle to go just 13-for-36 for 129 yards. Delane contributed a pair of pass breakups and an interception in the win.
Virginia: Anthony Colandrea, QB
Virginia stormed back from a double-digit deficit to beat Wake Forest on the road on Saturday, 31-30. The Cavaliers scored 14 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to get the job done. Colandrea threw for 357 yards and 3 touchdowns in the win.
I’d say it was a good weekend for the ACC. 3-2 vs p4 programs (1-1 vs the SEC, 1-0 vs Big 10, 1-1 vs Big 12). SMU should have beat BYU but other than that, everyone won the non-conference games they were supposed to win. Kudos to Cal for the win over Auburn!
Why did you give the ACC its own article on this site? Is this SEC football, or SEC and ACC football? What’s next, adding Mid-American Conference?
Because it used to be Saturday Down South and Saturday Road as 2 separate sites. They combined it so now it’s an SEC/ACC site
