Deion Sanders says Colorado is playing against ‘all of college football’ each week
Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes were bludgeoned by the Oregon Ducks on the road over the weekend. In the aftermath of CU’s first loss, FOX Sports’ Keyshawn Johnson went on Undisputed and said an unusually large number of coaches called Oregon in the week leading up to the game to help with their preparation.
“That’s ordinary,” Sanders said Tuesday when he was asked about the comment.
The implication from Johnson, obviously, is that people want to see Coach Prime lose. And that’s exactly what Sanders said immediately following the Oregon loss, that he felt like teams were trying to beat him and not just his team.
But Sanders took it a step further during his weekly press conference on Tuesday.
“That happens every week,” he said. “That’s not just from the Oregon game. That’s life. I want our coaches to understand we’re not just playing against a team, we’re playing against all of college football. It ain’t too many people lined up to see us dominate and see us win, they’ve got to understand that as a whole. Our entire staff has to understand you’re not just participating against that school.
“We call for information as well. That’s not a one-stop type of thing. I know Keyshawn alluded to the gentleman saying they had a plethora of calls trying to assist, which is understandable. That don’t make it no tougher, no easier. We understand that’s what we’re up against.”
Oregon beat the Buffs 42-6. In doing so, the ninth-ranked Ducks didn’t exactly expose anything new that hadn’t been put on tape through Colorado’s first three weeks of the season. Oregon attacked the areas most expected it to.
Colorado’s offensive line looked like a weak point, and Oregon pressured quarterback Shedeur Sanders often. The Colorado run game had been nonexistent through three games, so its failure to produce in Week 4 wasn’t a surprise. And the Buffs had struggled to stop the run.
Now, Colorado has to find a way to pick up the pieces, turn around, and get ready for the No. 8 team in the country. USC visits Boulder on Saturday.
Sanders’ team has quickly become one of the most talked-about teams in college football. And with that brings hate. Asked what his message was to the people looking to see him fail, Sanders said he is preaching to his team to just keep the focus on those inside the Buffs’ football building.
“I don’t have a message to detractors or haters,” he said. “I don’t take my time to respond and to defend myself. Why would I do that? I’m giving you a microphone if I’m doing that. I’m giving you solace that you’re in my life. I don’t care. I really don’t. If it’s been that way all my life you would think that I’m used to it.
“I’m not new to this, I’m true to this and I keep going. I’m good with that, man. This is a comfortable place for me.”
