Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday, a 42-6 dismantling at the hands of the Oregon Ducks.

Oregon scored touchdowns on six of its first seven possessions. The Ducks came out ready to play. Maybe that had something to do with the speech coach Dan Lanning delivered in the locker room before the game.

Sanders has seen a number of people take shots at him and his program since taking over last winter. He was asked after the game if he thinks there’s a target on Colorado’s back.

“I don’t think there’s a target on our back. Teams are trying to beat me,” he said. “They’re not trying to beat our team. They keep forgetting I’m not playing anymore. I had a great career. I’m serious. I got a gold jacket I didn’t buy. I’m good. But that’s what it really is.”

Sanders also pushed back on the narrative that Colorado needed to suffer its first loss of the season to humble itself after a 3-0 start.

“People around the country will say this is what they needed to humble themselves. We weren’t arrogant or whatever,” he said. “We’re just confident people. If our confidence offends your insecurity, that’s a problem with you, that’s not us. … We expect to win every game we step out there.”

The Buffs (3-1, 0-1 Pac-12) are back at home next week to host No. 5 USC.
