A tragic event took the life of a former Central Florida football player on Monday night, and left his mother injured.

Former Central Florida star Otis Anderson Jr. died in the incident, and his father, Otis Lee Anderson, 52, was booked into Duval County Jail on Tuesday morning and charged with second-degree murder, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office records showed, News4Jax reported.

At UCF, Anderson Jr. finished his career with 2,182 rushing yards and 17 rushing touchdowns. Anderson had 1,025 yards and 9 receiving touchdowns. Anderson Jr. was briefly a member of the Los Angels Rams this season. Anderson Jr. spent training camp with the Rams after he went undrafted in the 2021 NFL Draft, and was cut from the practice squad in September.

UCF Athletics Director Marc Daniels shared his thoughts on social media: “A bright sun shines over a special place that makes one pause and think of the many memories that a new angel gave us. We pray and mourn a loss of a life taken far too soon…”
