What Jimbo Fisher had to say following first half of Texas A&M’s season opener

Heading into the first game of the Jimbo Fisher era in College Station, the Aggie coach let it be known that Kellen Mond would get the start of the season against Northwestern State in the opener but he also indicated Nick Starkel would also play in the game. So far in the first half, it’s been all Mond on the field, despite a slow start to the game.

Fisher’s expertise is beyond reproach when it comes to quarterback play and that proved to be the case yet again here as Mond finished the first half of the game completing 15 of 22 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns. The sophomore also added a rushing touchdown in the first half. If not for a bad drop in the end zone, Mond would have made one of the more spectacular throws ever seen at Kyle Field after heating up in the first half.

Coming off the field at halftime, Fisher was asked what he thought of Mond’s performance and what his plan would be for his quarterbacks in the second half by Cole Cubelic, sideline analyst for the SEC Network.

“In the first half, it’s been really good,” Fisher responded. “It’s about getting the ball where it needs to be going. The sacks? A couple of guys should have been blocked, we missed protections on that. His accuracy has been good, managed the clock well in the two-minute situation and made some nice run checks.

“We’ll probably start (Mond) second half, come out that way. If we can come out and establish ourselves then we will go with (Starkel) in the second half.”

Texas A&M leads Northwestern State by a score of 35 to zero entering halftime.
