Cooper Mays has missed a few preseason practices, but Josh Heupel is optimistic that the lineman will be good to go for Week 1.
The first question of Heupel’s Thursday press conference was about Mays. The head coach said the starting center had a minor medical procedure, adding that the Vols don’t expect Mays to be out of camp for long.
“Coop had a minor procedure late yesterday,” Heupel told reporters. “He’ll be back. He’ll be healthy as we get closer to kickoff. Anticipate that being a couple of week deal.”
Mays is entering his fourth season on Rocky Top. He started all 13 games at center for the Vols in 2022, logging 894 snaps without allowing a sack in the final 5 games of the year.
A UT legacy and former Knoxville Catholic standout, Mays has 2 remaining seasons of eligibility. Mays was a third-team preseason All-SEC selection by the media ahead of the 2023 season.
The Vols play Virginia in Nashville on Sept. 2 to open the 2023 season.
