Josh Heupel speaks after Tennessee's strong 1st half at Alabama
Josh Heupel was happy at halftime at Alabama, but there’s more to come.
Tennessee scored a late touchdown to lead 20-7 at halftime.
Heupel spoke with Jenny Dell of CBS Sports at halftime, and complimented Joe Milton.
“Doing ordinary things at a high level,” Heupel said. “Fundamentally he’s playing well, but guys outside, protection’s been really solid. Going to need more of that in the second half. Reset, replay, refocus. Play one play (at a time) during second half, man. We’ve got to play for 60 (minutes) in this one.”
Tennessee got off to a blistering start in the first quarter and led 13-0. But Alabama recovered and scored a touchdown midway through the second quarter.
Milton and the Tennessee offense came out blazing in the 1st quarter, and Milton was 10-for-13 passing for 112 yards, 1 TD with 3 carries for 21 yards. Overall, Tennessee had 187 yards in the 1st quarter to Alabama’s 36 yards. Tennessee had 10 first downs, to Alabama’s 1.
The Vols opened with an 8-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 39-yard touchdown pass from Milton to Squirrel White, who dove and grabbed the pass with his fingertips.
Alabama finally got on the scoreboard when Jalen Milroe connected with Jermaine Burton, who has emerged as Milroe’s go-to guy. But after momentum appeared to shift to Alabama, an interception by Jaylen McCollough flipped it back to the Vols.
