Tennessee’s 2019 class will most likely be key to Jeremy Pruitt’s challenging rebuild as he tries to massively upgrade the Vols’ roster. It will be much easier to determine just how much success Pruitt has had in his first full year of recruiting when prospects can begin signing their National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, the first day of the Early Signing Period.

The Vols have 20 commitments. While that’s respectable, the Vols are still looking for some more star power, as evident by the fact that they only have one five-star commitments and just seven four-star commitments. The Vols 2019 class ranks 16th in the nation but only sixth in the SEC.

Here is a breakdown of what the Vols have gotten done so far:

No. 1: OL

5-stars: 1

4-stars: 1

Skinny: The Vols have 4 offensive linemen committed. The headliner of this group — and the entire class — is Wanya Morris from Grayson High School in Loganville, Ga. The 6-5, 311-pound prospect is UT’s only 5-star commitment in the class. Clearly, Pruitt wants more size up front. The Vols committed offensive linemen are all listed at at least 300 pounds.

No. 2: DBs

5-stars: 0

4-stars: 3

Skinny: Pruitt didn’t hide the fact that he wanted bigger, more physical defensive backs than the Vols had when he arrived. Seemingly, this group should address that need. Three of the four defensive back commitments are at least 6-feet tall. The highest-rated prospect is 4-star Jaylen McCollough from Hillgrove High School in Powder Springs, Ga.

No. 3: DL

5-stars: 0

4-stars: 0

Skinny: The Vols have 6 defensive linemen committed. That’s certainly a good number in terms of quantity, but the Vols don’t yet have a highly-rated DL. Tennessee will expect Savion Williams from Lackawanna Community College in Scranton, Pa., to be an immediate impact player. He should at least provide depth at defensive tackle. The Vols will also expect the same from Darel Middleton, a defensive tackle from East Mississippi Community College. They’re not highly rated, but they are older and more mature thanks to their JUCO stopovers.

No. 4: WRs

5-stars: 0

4-stars: 2

Skinny: The Vols have at least two big-time potential playmakers based on their recruiting ranking. Four-star receiver Ramel Keyton from Marietta (Ga.) High School is the highest rated amongst the group, but just barely ahead of tight end Jackson Lowe from Cartersville (Ga.). Both are 4-star prospects.

No. 5: LBs

5-stars: 0

4-stars: 1

Skinny: It was apparent that the Vols needed more playmakers at linebacker last season. Lakia Henry from Dodge City (Kansas) Community College should be able to provide that immediately since he is a JUCO player and a 4-star prospect.

No. 6: Backfield (QBs and RBs)

5-stars: 0

4-stars: 0

Skinny: Despite just having a 3-star rating, the Vols are expecting Brian Maurer from West Port High School in Ocala, Fla., to at least become Jarrett Guarantano’s backup at quarterback. The Vols are still looking for a highly-rated running back to join this class.
