Tennessee coaching analysis: Evaluating Week 6 loss to Florida
The Tennessee Volunteers (2-3) extended their annual losing streak to SEC East rival Florida to 10 games with a 10-9 loss on Saturday. The Vols held the Gators scoreless through the three quarters before allowing 10 unanswered points. However, the offense failed to find the end zone, settling for three field goals.
Tennessee’s play calling was suspect and offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian deserves some of the blame. The Vols have one of the worst offensive lines in college football and a quarterback who is talented, but far from a dual-threat option. Still, Tennessee runs a read option offense that puts Justin Worley on a swivel for opposing defenses.
Bajakian also deserves criticism for calling an overly conservative game with a 9-0 lead. The Vols tried to hold on to their lead rather than add to it. Tennessee didn’t make enough attempts at big plays and played too cautiously on offense.
In regards to Butch Jones, the team looked prepared on for the game and the defense looked outstanding. However, the offense– specifically in the trenches– was the ultimate catalyst in the losing effort. The scheme does not fit the current personnel, but could improve with the proper recruiting.
Tennessee still has a long way to go in its rebuilding process and must make the necessary adjustments to succeed against a tough SEC schedule.
