It’s still early to have any extensive knowledge of the inner workings of the 2016 Alabama squad with Week 2 of fall camp in the books, but we did gain snippets. Here are the five big takeaways:

1. THREE-HORSE RACE AT QB

The quarterback battle is a legit three-man race. An AL.com report indicated a large number of those inside the program believe Jalen Hurts is actually likely to win the starting job at some point early in the season. Keep in mind this is just one report with unnamed sources, so take it with a grain of salt. However, it seems likely there is at least some truth to this report.

It stands to reason that Hurts is legitimately under consideration for the starting job despite being a true freshman. He enrolled early, looked solid during the spring, developed a reputation for hitting the weight room and has done well so far this fall.

It is easy to read into the early returns from Saturday’s scrimmage, but ultimately, the scrimmage provided the coaches a sort of game tape to perform better evaluations. No doubt, the scrimmage has value, but the Alabama coaches will carefully study the film and make judicious decisions, much to the chagrin of fans who want answers now.

2. ANOTHER FRESHMAN ASCENSION?

Freshman running back B.J. Emmons has made a strong impression on head coach Nick Saban. Saban called Emmons a “very naturally instinctive guy” with a strong work ethic who should be able to contribute to the team this season. Damien Harris and Bo Scarbrough continue to get the first-team reps.

3. SECONDARY STILL IN THE LAB

The coaches continue to tinker with the secondary. Marlon Humphrey is firmly entrenched as the starting outside corner, and Ronnie Harrison appears to have locked up one of the safety spots. Eddie Jackson worked at safety in the team’s base package, sliding up to nickel back in nickel packages.

Minkah Fitzpatrick is the starter at the other outside corner slot but has also spent time at the nickel back. Saban told reporters he hates to change players from positions, but Fitzpatrick is one of the best players equipped to do such a thing.

Hootie Jones appears to be the top reserve at safety, while Anthony Averett and Shyheim Carter continue to get plenty of reps at cornerback. Tony Brown is in the background with his pending NCAA suspension, but expect him to compete for playing time when he is able to return to the team.

Carter continued to make his case after standing out at Saturday’s scrimmage. Finally, Maurice Smith received permission to transfer to Georgia, so bad publicity directed at Alabama with respect to its transfer policy should subside.

4. O-LINE PROVING DEEP

The offensive line continues to look better. Saban actually said the offensive line looks better depth-wise than a year ago. Cam Robinson, Lester Cotton and Ross Pierschbacher have all solidified their roles as starters. Saban said he’s seen “really, really good” work from Jonah Williams at right tackle and has also seen good things from Bradley Bozeman at right guard. Alphonse Taylor received more reps at right guard this week in practice, so he is still a possibility as the starter at right guard.

5. INJURY REPORT

A few minor injuries to report: Scarbrough was “dinged” during Saturday’s scrimmage after a good showing at the start of the scrimmage, Dalvin Tomlinson twisted his ankle and Da’Shawn Hand was held out of the scrimmage. All three are expected back at practice this week, according to Saban.
