No matter who starts at quarterback for Alabama, the Crimson Tide will head into the 2015 season with an unproven signal-caller.

Ideally in such a situation the team would have an veteran offensive line to make life easier on the quarterback.

That both is and is not the case at Alabama, where some of the five spots in front of QB Alec Morris, Jake Coker or David Cornwell are filled with seasoned players boasting All-American potential, but after losing three starting lineman, including two NFL draft picks, others are just as green as the quarterback they will be charged to protect.

On top of that, the Tide has had to deal with some injuries, recently to senior right tackle Dominick Jackson, in preseason camp while trying to establish a cohesive unit among five players who haven’t played too many snaps together.

Alabama isn’t easing into the season, traveling to Arlington, Texas, to take on a big, tough Wisconsin team in the season opener. So it’s not like Nick Saban and his offensive line coach Mario Cristobal will have a couple of weeks against patsies to feel the situation out before opening the SEC schedule with a home game against Ole Miss on Sept. 19.

Here’s a quick look at a few Crimson Tide offensive linemen to keep an eye on.

Key starter: As a returning starter at center, senior Ryan Kelly anchors the whole unit and was an outstanding blocker last season, especially in the passing game. According to SB Nation he was successful on more than 99 percent of his assignments in 2014 and has been involved in 16 games with a 100-yard rusher in his career. As the lone senior starter, Kelly is in position to be the unquestioned leader of the group.

Star potential: Cam Robinson is just a sophomore, but his talent is so immense at left tackle he’s becoming more of a vocal leader on the field. Banged up a bit early in training camp, Robinson is feeling fine these days and a popular pick on some preseason All-American teams. At 6-foot-6, 326 pounds, he allowed just three sacks as a freshman.

Keep an eye on: Though he wasn’t listed among the starters coming out of spring, Alphonse Taylor has reportedly been working out with the first string often in recent practices. A junior who has played in 20 games in his career, Taylor is having a good enough preseason to potentially be on the field with the starters when the Wisconsin game rolls around.

Other projected starters: Senior Dominick Jackson is probably the man at right tackle if he’s healthy enough to go opening week while redshirt freshman Ross Pierschbacher looks like he’s earned a starting spot at left guard. Pierschbacher will be the most inexperienced player in the group, but at least he’s sitting right between Kelly and Robinson.

Curveball: Bradley Bozeman seemed like he was heading toward the starting job at right guard coming out of spring, but he may end up the victim of Taylor’s surge up the depth chart. While Bozeman surely wants to be a starter, it might not be a bad deal for everyone involved if he winds up something of a sixth man in this unit. He played in nine games last year and started two and is one of the more versatile players on the line. He could be a valuable sub for almost any position, including center and guard, where he got his starts a year ago.

Most telling game: The Crimson Tide visits Georgia on Oct. 3. The Bulldogs have a strong pass rush led by an outstanding group of linebackers who will continue to throw different looks and blitzes at the Alabama front five. The two teams are both national title contenders and fairly evenly matched at most positions. How the battle up front shakes out could determine the victor in a potential SEC Championship Game preview.
