Three weeks into the season, Louisville QB Lamar Jackson is considered the Heisman Trophy frontrunner. Jackson already has 913 passing yards, 464 rushing yards and 18 total touchdowns on the young season.

CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli points out, however, that the September favorite doesn’t often win the award in December. He named the top five non-Jackson candidates, and Alabama QB Jalen Hurts made the list at No. 4:

The fact Hurts is a true freshman hurts (sorry) his chances to win the award, but he’s also the quarterback for the Crimson Tide. Alabama is your favorite in the SEC, and there’s a very good chance it will be in the College Football Playoff. So when you can get a quarterback from a title contender at 33-to-1 odds, you have to give it some serious thought. I won’t put Hurts any higher on this list just because he doesn’t have a long enough track record, and his stats aren’t quite eye-popping yet.

Alabama players have figured prominently in the Heisman race in recent years, with Amari Cooper being named a finalist in 2014 and Derrick Henry winning the award in 2015.

Hurts will get a chance to pad his stats Saturday against Kent State.
