Former Alabama All-American defensive tackle Terrence Cody was sentenced to nine months in jail on Thursday.

According to the Baltimore Sun, the former Baltimore Raven could’ve been punished up to two years but will serve his time at the Baltimore County detention center on charges for animal cruelty.

Cody was released by the Ravens in February of 2015 as he was being investigated. He was indicted that same month on charges of aggravated animal cruelty, neglect, illegal possession of an alligator and possession of marijuana.

The animal cruelty charge was in connection with the death of his dog, Taz, which prosecutors said died of starvation the month before his indictment. An earlier report from the Baltimore Sun stated that employees at the hospital believed the Canary mastiff to already be dead due to its sickly condition at the time.

Cody played for Alabama in 2008 and 2009 before being selected in the second round by the Ravens. He was mostly a backup in his five seasons in Baltimore.
