Alabama coach Nick Saban announced Thursday on his radio show that defensive backs Xavian Marks and Trevon Diggs will fill in as punt returners with Eddie Jackson out for the year after breaking his leg against Texas A&M.

“I think both guys are capable,” Saban said. “They’re both young guys but they’ve both showed good talent ability to do it when they got the opportunity to do it. That’s why, early in the season, we put guys in a lot of different situations because, I always knew Eddie was the best punt returner, had the best judgment, best (to) field the ball, best possession with the ball. But we let those other guys get in there some.”

Marks and Diggs have big shoes to fill. Jackson led the nation with two punt return touchdowns and averaged 23 yards per return. Saban said that WR Calvin Ridley could also be used at punt returner, but he would prefer to stick with the two defensive backs.
