Apparently, not everyone is a fan of the quarterback that ran through the SEC schedule with a 35 to 2 touchdown to interception ratio.

That’s what Tua Tagovailoa accomplished last season but his performance against Clemson in the College Football Playoff National Championship has drawn some criticism. If you missed it, an anonymous coach called out Tua Tagovailoa in the latest edition of Lindy’s Sports Southeastern Conference 2019 preview magazine.

Here is the comment regarding Tagovailoa from the unnamed coach:

“I think Tua needs to humble himself. I think he did some bad things in the bowl game that cost the team because he put himself ahead of the team. He needs to understand Alabama won national championships by playing great defense and special teams and not beating itself. In the national championship game, the quarterback play was atrocious, and some would say the play-calling, too.”

During his Wednesday appearance on “The Opening Kickoff” on WNSP-FM 105.5 FM, former Ole Miss and Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville could not disagree more with those comments. Here is what Tuberville had to say when asked about the comments from the anonymous coach regarding Tua.

“You got to look at how much pressure was put on a quarterback during the game, especially a game like that,” Tuberville said. “This kid Tua, I haven’t seen many like him over the years. Very accurate, puts the ball on the money. He throws in and out of the pocket. He takes a licking and keeps on ticking. He’s kind of like the Energizer bunny.

“I like him. I like the way he runs the team. In that game, right or wrong, he looked like he was taking it all on his shoulders because the defense line for Clemson, there wasn’t any better. He was trying to hold on till the last minute, trying to get it downfield. It was just one of those where he tried and tried and tried and couldn’t get it done. It definitely wasn’t his fault, it was a team loss.”

Following up those comments, Tuberville went on to note that if not for Tagovailoa and Alabama’s offense, the Crimson Tide would likely not have even in a position to reach the title game and the incredible numbers they put up last season may have masked some deficiencies with the rest of Nick Saban’s team.

“You can’t say anything bad about what he did that year, even in that game,” Tuberville added. “I tell you, I thought he ran that football team and I thought he did an excellent job. Your quarterback in the key to the engine and they weren’t as good on defense as they’ve been and thanks to Tua and those receivers, they jumped out to big leads and they hammered people because of it.”

For all the talk of Tua’s performance in the game, he still managed to throw for 295 yards and two touchdowns despite throwing two interceptions. Trevor Lawrence, on the other hand, threw for 347 yards and three scores without a turnover. None of which can be put on Tua.
