This is part of a daily series this week on each SEC team’s bowl possibilities and likely destination in prep for Sunday’s College Football Bowl Selection Show.

For the first time in three seasons, the Razorbacks are going bowling.

Arkansas, which entered the season on a 12-game SEC losing streak, hit the necessary six-win mark against nationally-ranked Ole Miss and nearly played itself into better position last week at Mizzou.

At one point this season, the Razorbacks were 4-5 with three games left against quality teams but found a way to reach the postseason. The became the first unranked team ever to shut-out consecutive ranked opponents, doing so against the Rebels and LSU.

“I’ve been through the tough times, and it’s tough not making a bowl game,” junior safety Rohan Gaines said. “I think the seniors deserve all of this. We have great senior leadership; I feel like they deserve it all. They deserve the world, and we’re trying our best to give it to them.”

Rumored to be in the mix for the Nebraska opening, second-year coach Brett Bielema said this week that he is committed to the Razorbacks long-term and intends on keeping his promise in building a championship-caliber program.

Recent Arkansas bowl history

  • 2006: Capital One Bowl — vs. Wisconsin, 17-14, Loss
  • 2007: Cotton Bowl — vs. Mizzou, 38-7, Loss
  • 2009: Liberty Bowl — vs. East Carolina, 20-17, Win
  • 2010: Sugar One Bowl — vs. Ohio State, 31-26, Loss
  • 2011: Cotton Bowl — vs. Kansas State, 29-16, Win

Possible bowl destinations

At 6-6, the pickings are slim for Arkansas unless there’s a certain bowl game — like the Liberty in Memphis or Independence in Shreveport — that really tries to make a push for the Razorbacks. Birmingham gets the SEC’s ‘last team in’ so to speak, which appears to be Arkansas or South Carolina since Tennessee, also 6-6, should stay relatively close to home after ending the season on a positive note at Vanderbilt.

Final bowl pairings will be announced on Sunday.
