Auburn sophomore defensive end Byron Cowart, a former 5-star recruit who played in eight games for the Tigers in 2015, was arrested for possession of marijuana on April 30, along with defensive backs Carlton Davis and Jeremiah Dinson, and wide receiver Ryan Davis.

But despite the fact that all four players face second-degree possession charges — a Class A misdemeanor — Auburn defensive line coach Rodney Garner remains positive, and believes this particular circumstance can serve as a valuable teaching moment for all involved.

“I think they’re all remorseful,” Garner said, according to the Ledger-Enquirer. “They made a mistake, we disciplined them and we got to move on and learn from it. You try to put corrective measures in place that when a young man makes a mistake, you use it as a teaching moment. You discipline them and all that, but hopefully they learn something from it and won’t repeat the same mistake.”

Coach Gus Malzahn has yet to announce what the official punishment will be for each individual, but Garner seems to have personally moved on and has his focus elsewhere.

“I think all kids make mistakes,” Garner said. “I got six, and I know mine make mistakes daily. The problem is they’re student-athletes, and everything is magnified. Like I said, you use it as a teaching moment. You try to learn from it. You try to grow from it and you try not to repeat it.”

All four players are schedule to appear in court on July 21.
