Before the start of the season, Jeremy Johnson was touted as the next great Auburn quarterback.

But Johnson struggled early and was benched for Sean White.

White showed promise before getting injured. But he didn’t convince anyone that he was the best long-term option.

White threw for 1,064 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions in five starts for the Tigers.

Though White didn’t become an overnight star, he was only a freshman. He got thrown into the fire and didn’t do a terrible job.

An offseason preparing to be the starter could do wonders as he approaches his sophomore season.

So what will Auburn do?

The Tigers have a few options. White might not be in their plans. It isn’t likely that Johnson will be the guy in 2016. He had his opportunity and didn’t take advantage.

And then there’s Jonathan Franklin III, a highly touted junior-college prospect from East Mississippi Community College, who signed with Auburn earlier this week and may be the frontrunner for the starting job.

Franklin could follow in the footsteps of former junior-college transfers Cam Newton and Nick Marshall.

It’s likely that White and Franklin will compete for the starting role. But at this point, it’s hard to peg White as the answer for Auburn.
