The former Florida player found dead in his car outside Pittsburgh on Friday committed suicide, the Associated Press reported.

Chris “Juice” Johnson, 22 years old, played at Florida from 2011-12 before transferring to Duquesne. He apparently died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Many current and former Gators have taken to social media to express shock and sadness at his passing.

A native of Ocala, Fla., he earned his nickname as a high school running back who resembled the former Heisman Trophy winner.

Johnson mostly played special teams during his 26 games with the Gators. In his final game with Florida, the 2013 Sugar Bowl, he threw a punch after a surprise onside kick by Louisville and got ejected. Johnson transferred to Duquesne soon after.

As a member of the Dukes, Johnson made 104 tackles, two fumbles and two interceptions.

“When I texted with him on Wednesday, it was all good. You wouldn’t have known anything,” Justin Wentworth, a former high school coach, told the Ocala Star Banner. “He said everything was going good — typical upbeat, ‘Juice’ stuff. Getting this news hurts deep. It’s a knife to the heart.”
