The New York Jets completely revamped their secondary during this year’s NFL Draft, selecting former LSU S Jamal Adams in the first round and ex-Florida S Marcus Maye in the second.

Both players have performed well so far, but Maye in particular has drawn the eye of his new coach.

Jets coach Todd Bowles told NJ.com that he’s been impressed with the rookie so far during training camp:

“[Marcus] has been good,” coach Todd Bowles said. “He’s been solid. He doesn’t play like a rookie so we just hope he keeps getting better.”

Maye showed his ball-hawking skills during a scrimmage on Saturday, intercepting a pass and returning it for a touchdown. That big play caught the eye of veteran DL Steve McLendon, who is excited to see what Maye can do this fall:

“It’s amazing for a young guy to come in and get a pick six and do it in front of his fans,” McLendon said. “Hopefully, it can carry over to next week and we can continue to build on these little things.”

The Jets still have a lot of work to do before they become a playoff-caliber team, but with guys like Maye in the secondary, the defense could take a step forward this season.
