The Kansas City Chiefs have confirmed third-year safety Sanders Commings, a former Georgia player, is a cousin to Reverend Clementa Pinckney, one of the nine victims during Wednesday night’s mass shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sanders Commings and his family,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said following practice Thursday.

Commings posted the following tweet Thursday morning:

Primary suspect Dylann Roof, 21, of Lexington County, S.C., was apprehended Thursday morning in Shelby, N.C., following a tip from a passing motorist.

According to the New York Times, Pinckney, 41, was ‘was a pioneering pastor who began preaching at 13 and was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives at 23, becoming the youngest African-American to be elected to the State Legislature.’
