Kirby Smart revealed Monday that Mykel Williams suffered a stable Grade 2 ankle sprain in Georgia’s 34-3 pounding of Clemson on Saturday in Atlanta, and that’s a major concern for the top-ranked Bulldogs.

But it could’ve been worse, and Smart is confident that the junior defensive lineman’s injury is not a serious one. Williams, a 2nd-team All-SEC selection last season, is considered “week-to-week,” so his availability going forward is in question starting with this Saturday’s home game against Tennessee Tech.

Williams had 2 solo tackles in the Week 1 blowout of Clemson as Georgia began its pursuit of a 3rd national title in 4 seasons. Williams registered 4.5 sacks in each of the past 2 seasons, helping the Bulldogs repeat as national champions as a freshman in 2022.

Meanwhile, Smart also gave an update on Bulldogs defensive back Joenel Aguero, who he said was “close to going” against Clemson. Smart said he’s hoping the sophomore can make his 2024 debut this Saturday in Athens against the Golden Eagles.

Smart said that Aguero sustained a “pull” in practice a week before the Clemson game.

“We really need to get Joenel healthy,” said Smart.

Aguero’s injury changed the roles for the Clemson game for safeties Malaki Starks, Dan Jackson and KJ Bolden, as well as nickel JaCorey Thomas.
