The Governor’s Cup is a hotly-contested trophy within the state of Kentucky.

Both UK and Louisville annually compete for the award. The rivalry first started in 1912. After a 70-year break, the series was reignited in 1994.

Louisville had been the dominant team heading into this year’s game. The Cardinals had won five-straight against their in-state foe.

However, Mark Stoops and the Wildcats changed the narrative. Kentucky beat Louisville by a score of 41-38. It gave UK a 7-5 record — as well as the satisfaction in knowing it will possess the Governor’s Cup for the next season.

Bourbon Country, Kentucky is part of the greater Lexington area — where the university sits. This region is said to be where bourbon was first associated.
