LSU added a key player to its 2025 recruiting class on Friday evening.

The Tigers landed a commitment from 3-star defensive lineman Walter Mathis Jr. He chose LSU over several other top programs, including Miami, Clemson and Auburn, amongst others.

Mathis is a Georgia native who had offers from most of the top SEC and ACC programs in the region. Texas, Alabama, Oregon and Colorado are a few of the other programs who offered Mathis a scholarship within the past few months.

Mathis is on the cusp of 4-star status. He’s currently the No. 438 overall player and the No. 48 defensive lineman in the country for the class of 2025, per 247 Sports Composite rankings. Given his impressive offer list, it would not be a surprise to see Mathis make the jump to being a 4-star before the end of this cycle.

Mathis is listed at 6-foot-3, 285 pounds. He attends Calvary Day School in Savannah, Georgia.

Mathis is 1 of 6 defensive linemen who have committed to LSU since the start of the summer. New DL coach Bo Davis has proved to be an excellent recruiter during his first cycle in Baton Rouge. Overall, LSU currently has the nation’s No. 3-ranked class in the country, per 247Sports Composite rankings.
