This is part of a daily series this week on each SEC team’s bowl possibilities and likely destination in prep for Sunday’s College Football Bowl Selection Show.

Mississippi State’s heading to a school-record sixth straight bowl game, but it may not be the placement the Bulldogs had envisioned after climbing to No. 1 this season.

Two losses over the final three games knocked Dan Mullen’s team out of College Football Playoff contention and into the New Year’s Six which remains an impressive feat for this year’s team.

The Egg Bowl loss at Ole Miss last weekend was difficult to swallow for Mullen heading into bowl season after his team gave up 8.6 yards per play to an offense playing without its best player, Laquon Treadwell.

“You get upset if you give up six 20-yard plays in the game,” Mullen said. “To give up 80s and 90s, that’s not going to cut it ever.”

Recent Mississippi State bowl history

Possible bowl destinations

It appears Mississippi State will land in the Peach Bowl against a fellow New Year’s Six at-large opponent or head to Miami to take on Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl. Since Michigan State’s ranked ahead of the Bulldogs at No. 8, the Spartans could grab the Orange Bowl bid. Thanks to one of the best regular seasons in program history, Mississippi State has assured itself a spot in a meaningful bowl game.

Final bowl pairings will be announced on Sunday.
