Mississippi State updates status of QB Blake Shapen after injury vs. Florida
Mississippi State quarterback Blake Shapen will miss the remainder of the 2024 season.
The Bulldogs confirmed Saturday evening that Shapen, who exited in the fourth quarter of MSU’s 45-28 loss to Florida, has a shoulder injury that will require season-ending surgery. The senior could apply for a medical waiver to get the year back.
“We’re all hurting for Blake after this unfortunate news,” MSU head football coach Jeff Lebby said in a statement. “Blake is the ultimate competitor and teammate and an unquestioned leader in our program. I know he will work incredibly hard to come back stronger than ever, and he will continue to serve as a team leader from the sidelines. We will support Blake every step of the way during his recovery process and explore all options to help him seek a medical hardship waiver to regain his lost year of eligibility.”
Shapen is in his first season at Mississippi State after transferring from Baylor during the offseason.
With the Bulldogs trailing by 14 points late in the third quarter, Shapen appeared to injure his shoulder on a run. He stayed down on the deck after taking a hit and was helped to his feet, but stayed in on the drive.
The drive ended on downs early in the fourth quarter. Florida marched 93 yards to ice the game and Shapen never returned to the field. Freshman Michael Van Buren took snaps over the Bulldogs’ final 2 series.
He finished 7-for-13 passing for 100 yards.
A Composite 4-star recruit in the 2024 class, Van Buren figures to lead the Bulldogs (1-3) going forward. Mississippi State travels to No. 1 Texas next Saturday.
Sad to hear this. Starkville was a great time and an amazing college town . The state fans are nothing but a class act.
Thank you for that…we have a long road ahead of us
